Costa Rica beat Honduras 5 – 0 in Costa Rica’s World Cup qualifier.
Costa Rica goalkeeper Diego Sanchez scored twice as Costa Rica defeated Honduras 5 1.5-0 in front of nearly 75,000 fans in Costa Rico.
The visitors opened the scoring after just four minutes.
Bryan Herrera crossed from the left and Jose Carlos Salazar was able to get his hands on a ball in the box and slot it past Luis Quintero.
At the other end, Jorge Villafaña scored a penalty after getting down in the area and his low shot hit the crossbar.
Costa Rican fans in the stands booed and the players were seen walking away from the field.
A few minutes later, Herrera’s second goal of the match gave the visitors a 2-1 lead.
With just four seconds left, Herrera scored his third of the game after getting on the end of a corner.
The home side then made a second goal in the 76th minute when Miguel Angel Quinteros sent a cross into the box that found Salazar in the far corner of the box.
Salazar took the free kick and slotted it past Quinteroes keeper.
It was the first goal scored by Salazar this tournament, which will make him the first player to score a hat trick in the tournament.
Honduras tied the game with two minutes left in the first half.
Vidal Sanchez put Honduras up 2-2 with a free kick.
That would be the Honduran’s only shot on goal in an otherwise lackluster first half for the visitors.
In the second half, Salazar put Honduras ahead 2-0 with a right-footed shot that beat Quinteras keeper.
The ball bounced over the bar and hit Salazar, who put the ball away with a low finish.
For the second straight game, the hosts made it 3-0, but the visitors’ second goal came after 15 minutes.
Nacho Perez was on the ground in pain after being fouled by the Hondurans.
After a foul, the Honduras’ captain went down in pain and couldn’t continue.
Despite Perez being down, Quintera put on his gloves and made the right call to come off.
“It was a terrible mistake,” Quinterase said.
Costa Rica was awarded a penalty in the 69th minute, but that was waved off.
With two minutes remaining, Salazas was shown a red card for a foul on his captain.
Sanchez put Honduras in front again in the 85th minute with a shot from outside the box from a tight angle.
His shot bounced off Quinterases keeper and was just inches away from hitting the top of the net.
Giovani dos Santos came off for Costa Rican attacker Juan Antonio Hernan, but his effort sailed just wide of the post.
After the game, Hernano praised the team’s performance.
He said that he wanted to show his countrymen that he is an important player in the team.
Both teams will face each other again on Tuesday night in Honduras.
