Posted March 06, 2019 04:03:00Hotels and resorts around Niagara Falls are being asked to file a refund claim for the price of their rooms.
The hotel industry association says there is no guarantee the refund will be approved, and many hotels are having to go without money for a number of months.
“If you’re in a hotel for a year or longer, you can’t claim a refund,” said Julie Chappell, vice-president of the Niagara Falls Hotels Association.
“I mean, there’s no way that you can claim a hotel refund, and I don’t think anyone wants to do that.”
In some cases, hotels are still trying to get their money back from the city, the association says.
“They’re still waiting for the city to approve their refund claim,” Chappill said.
Hotels in Niagara Falls and its surrounding towns are the most expensive in Canada, and they’re also the ones that can be hit the hardest by the government’s recent cuts.
The city of Niagara Falls says there are about 8,600 hotels in the city.
The association says about 830 of those have been affected.
Hotel owners and operators are asking the city for $25,000 each to cover the cost of refunds, according to a statement released by the Niagara Parks and Recreation Department.
Hotos in the Niagara region have had to lay off workers, and it’s not clear how long it will take for the company to get back into the black.
“We know that it’s a challenging situation,” said Chappel.
“There’s been some real hardship that’s impacted many people.
We know that people are still struggling.”
The city says it has given hotels an extra $500,000 to cover claims, but the association doesn’t know how much that will buy.
